Is FreeAgent Good for a Small Limited Company?
By Trust Ledger Accounting. Figures checked against GOV.UK and last updated on .
Yes, for most small limited companies. FreeAgent handles invoicing, bank feeds, expenses, payroll and Making Tax Digital VAT returns in one place. Its regular price for a limited company is £33 + VAT a month, and it is included at no extra cost in every Trust Ledger Accounting monthly package, from £79 + VAT.
What FreeAgent does well
- Bank feeds. Transactions arrive automatically from your business bank account.
- Invoicing. Create, send and chase invoices, including recurring ones.
- Expenses. Photograph receipts on your phone and attach them to transactions.
- VAT. MTD-compliant returns are submitted to HMRC from inside the software.
- Payroll. Run a director's or small team's payroll and report to HMRC in real time.
- A live tax estimate. A running forecast of Corporation Tax, so the bill is never a surprise.
Where it is less suited
- Businesses that hold and track a lot of stock
- Companies that need detailed departmental or multi-entity reporting
- Larger teams with complex payroll
For a consultant, contractor, agency or other service business with a handful of people, those limits rarely matter.

Software is not the same as an accountant
FreeAgent keeps the records and files VAT. It does not decide how a transaction should be treated, prepare statutory accounts to accounting standards, or check that you have claimed what you are entitled to. Pairing it with an accountant gives you both. Read how we work on the FreeAgent accountant page.
